Sipping a coffee on the balcony in the blazing sunshine is not everybody’s picture of Switzerland in the summer, but Ried-Mörel is warm. Think Italian weather with massive mountains in the background. Ried-Mörel itself at 1168m, is a small village with shop and restaurant close by. It is a fantastic place for walking with the UNESCO recognised Aletschwald just up the hill and the amazing Aletsch Glacier over the ridge. For the less energetic there are several fantastic open air pools in the region and a range of cultural festivals in the summer months. Just along the valley from Brig there is the main wine growing area of the country, with a range of amazing small towns and villages. A quick trip through the Simplon tunnel will put you in Italy within an hour with the Italian lakes within a day trip close by. For those wanting a more leisurely experience why not try the world famous Glacier Express which runs through the valley on its way to Eastern Switzerland
